League of Heroes

(Active 1974 - 1983)

see also New League of Heroes

The League of Heroes was a largely American coalition of hero groups and independent superheroes who joined together in response to the threat of annexation of AltEarth by the Nomos, a militaristic and fundamentalist alien race.

Structure

The League was established by charter; major decisions were made by a vote during an assembly of the League's members. Other decisions were made and carried out by an executive committee elected by the full League. The constitution of the executive committee changed occasionally, but most of the time it included Captain Freedom (before his retirement in 1980), Bowman III, Shambling Man, The Mind, and a youthful Thunderstrike (who, though he was less experienced than his peers, was recognized as a natural leader).

History & Exploits

In 1975, the League thwarted Doctor Destroyer's attempt to conquer California as a prelude to world conquest. With the U.S. military largely blinded and crippled by Destroyer’s initial attacks on their communications and command systems, the League was the first line of defense. After a day of fierce fighting in San Francisco, the League routed the master villain’s forces. Victory was not without a price, for Dart of the Fabulous Five and Ocelot of the Sentinels (both also members of the league) were killed by Destroyer’s powerful energy bolts. Over a dozen other heroes suffered serious injuries.

It would not be long before the League was called on to face another global threat. In 1977 the Nomos returned with an invasion force (see above), attacking coastal cities throughout AltEarth. The League, bolstered by a group of Atlantean supers and even working with some supervillians, successfully defended Earth from the invasion.

Without a pressing global threat and plagued by internal personality clashes and disagreements, the League of Heroes effectively disbanded in 1983.

The League was re-formed as the New League of Heroes in 2006.

Base of Operations

Desiring seclusion for their meetings, the League accepted Captain Freedom's offer to use his family farm in Kansas as a headquarters. With the help of UNTIL and technology-oriented heroes, the humble farm was discretely transformed into a command center.
