The Champions (Missing in Action)
The Dissapearance
The current team (minus Presto) pursued a heretofore unknown armored supervillain from the scene of a robbery of a lab belonging to Elemental Technologies. The Champions followed the villain to a secret bunker at the edge of the city and haven’t been seen since.
Abduction by Apeiron
Excepting The Replacements, Presto, and Doctor Silverback, no one knows that the armored figure was actually the time-travelling resistance fighter Apeiron, who abducted the champions into a possible future in which the Champions had been killed in 2006 by Doctor Destroyer. In this timeline, the Age of Destroyer, Destroyer has conquered AltEarth and become its totalitarian emperor. The Champions agreed to stay and fight Destroyer in the Age of Destroyer, but with the help of Apeiron and Cypher AD, they were able to send one of Multitude's duplicates (see Sentry) to the tangent universe occupied by The Replacements by means of a nonlinearity driver. His mission is to aid in efforts to prevent Destroyer from conquering that timeline as well. For more on the principles and technology of time travel, see the background section Multiverse.
Aftermath
Before sealing the bunker, PRIMUS is reported to have removed several large pieces of equipment in the middle of the night onto a flatbed truck and spirited these away. PRIMUS says the matter is “currently under investigation” and is not releasing any further details about the incident.
Some suspect the whole thing is a ruse as the Champions and PRIMUS coordinate some new covert operation against some other organization or master villain. Others suspect that VIPER somehow found a way to strike back at the Champions. Some conspiracy theorists are even suggesting that the superteam may have been abducted by the Celestials for genetic experimentation, while others in the blogosphere have suggested that the Champions saw something the government didn’t want them to see in that bunker and have been “disappeared” by MIBs. No one, except perhaps Victor Bashang, Doctor Manhattan, and some highly placed officials have any notion of what actually happened to the team.
