Captain Freedom
A preliminary, and much abbreviated history (will add more later):
John Maxwell, an officer in the U.S. army, was the only success story of an attempt by the U.S. government to create super-soldiers during World War II. Many suspect that the super-soldier treatment only worked on Maxwell because he was already, to some degree, superhuman. In any case, the treatment granted him exceptional physical abilities, including a near-immunity to disease and a resistance to the physical deterioration of aging.
Dubbed Captain Freedom in 1940, he served as a special operations operative, counter-intelligence agent and a propaganda symbol. In 1941, he was charged with bringing to together a team of superheroes to fight overseas. As a result of his efforts and under his leadership, Freedom Battallion was formed.
He served valiantly in WWII and, in 1959 formed a new team, the Justice Squadron with some Golden Age comrades and some new heroes. The team split up in 1968.
Maxwell continued as a government hero, working closely with many independent heroes and groups, until 1980, when he retired after forty years of service.
In 1983 , he was elected to the U.S. Senate. A moderate Republican, he has served many terms for his home state of Kansas.
