Boston City Hall
In 2006, the Mayor sold Boston City Hall for $300 million used for the construction of new city hall in South Boston. Developers planned to raze the critically-acclaimed, but locally-despised building in order to construct hotels, restaurants and shops in a “town-center” style shopping plaza. The plans were halted when a group of architects and preservationists submitted a petition to the Boston Landmarks Commission asking that it be preserved. The commission added the building to the list of candidates for landmark status; the commission is studying the proposal, which is not expected to come to a final vote until February of 2009.
Facing a court injuction to cease demolition preparations, the frustrated developers must wait for a decision from the BLC before proceeding with their plans for the area. In the meantime, the developers have been leasing the unappealing, but conveniently located office space to private companies. One of its more unusual tenants, holding a one year lease, is the New League of Heroes.
